7 MB

I am sorry for not posting while I was away at Yale for three weeks. There is still a long way to go, but the rate is still increasing.

2 MB

I was surprised at how quickly this milestone snuck up. I have subscribed the email address to inboxdollars, so that may account for an increase in the spam rate due to the graphics in these emails. Every time a milestone is reached, the milestones section on the right will be edited to reflect it.

1 MB

Well, it has finally reached 1 MB. It was a slow start, but remember, the rate will only grow with time as more people find out about this project and spambots find the address and propogate it.

Some ways to help:
  • Post the email address (great.spam.project@gmail.com) in as many places as you can online.
  • Sign the address up for mailing lists, forum subscriptions, "free iPod"-esque offers, and any other membership that harvests emails.
  • Spread the word about this project to get others to do the above.
This is the first of many milestones, so you can all pat yourselves on the back.

I will definitely post at certain milestones (on the right) as well as at intermediate steps.

The Project

Most of you internet-ers are unfortunately familiar with spam. It follows you whenever you check your email. It relentlessly evades your filters, trying to get you to buy a new miracle product. It is tempting to pass up those offers for inexpensive Viagra and Cialis, and you have to restrain yourself with all your might to prevent yourself from signing up to make a million in a week.

I am sure that many of you are also familiar with Gmail, Google's free webmail service. In case you are unaware, Google offers over two and a half gigabytes of storage space (and growing).

I was thinking recently about how much mail could fit into a Gmail account. I then decided to see how long it would take for enough spam to accumulate in an account to fill it up if I was to deliberately make it a magnet for spam. I started a Gmail account and this blog for this purpose.

You readers out there can help the project out by signing great.spam.project@gmail.com up for any and every mailing list you can find. It will also help to post it in any place you can find so that the email bots can find it. It is your perogative - no - your duty.

I will constantly update the status of the account with an attached picture.
